Richard M. Riss, Ph.D., Professor of Church History at Pillar College, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in religious education.
Dr. Riss, a venerable educator of religion and former economist, has been serving Pillar College, formerly known as Somerset Christian College, as a professor of church history since 1989. While fulfilling this illustrious position, he was a research associate to the chief economist at C.J. Lawrence/Deutsche Bank Securities Corporation in New York City from 1991 to 1996, having formerly acted in the same capacity at Prudential Securities from 1988 to 1991. Commencing his career as a database manager for systems and management information services at First Chicago Corporation in 1980, he also held the role of instructor of church history at Christian Life College from 1980 to 1983.
To prepare for his career, Dr. Riss pursued formal education at the University of Rochester, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1974. Upon completing this accomplishment, he received a Master of Computer Science from Regent College in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, in 1979. After gaining valuable experience in the field, he attended the Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, receiving a Master of Arts in 1988. Years later, he earned a Master of Philosophy and Doctor of Philosophy from Drew University in 2002 and 2007, respectively.
The author of six books regarding religion, such as “Images of Revival,” “A History of the Worldwide Awakening, 1992-1995,” and “The Evidence for the Resurrection of Jesus Christ,” Dr. Riss has contributed myriad articles to various dictionaries and encyclopedias, thus sharing his wealth of knowledge with the religious community. He has been asked to present papers at Oxford University and recently presented at a conference held in Grand Rapids, MI. As such, in an effort to remain abreast of recent changes within the religious community, he has maintained affiliation with the Society for Pentecostal Studies, the Evangelical Theological Society, the Society of Christian Philosophers, the American Society of Church History and the Wesleyan Theological Society, among others.
Married to Kathryn Janet Grieser since 1979, Dr. Riss enjoys playing the violin in his spare time. He has been highlighted in several editions of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, Who’s Who in the East and Who’s Who in the World.
