Leo M. Scherr, Mathematics Teacher at East High School, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in secondary school education.

Delving into the field of education due to the influence of his own high school mathematics teacher, Mr. Scherr attended Northern State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in 1954. Completing postgraduate work at the University of Wyoming soon thereafter, he returned to Northern State University in 1958 and obtained a Master of Science. From 1958 to 1959, he completed further coursework at the University of Utah. He is a certified mathematics teacher in the state of Wyoming.

Mr. Scherr commenced his career at Sisseton High School in 1954, serving as a mathematics teacher. Remaining in this role for two years, he served in the same capacity at Campbell County High School from 1956 to 1958 and at the University of Utah from 1958 to 1959. During the latter parts of his career, he served as a mathematics teacher at East High School in Laramie County School District 1 in Cheyenne, WY, for 36 years until his retirement in 1995. During this time, he also acted as an adjunct professor at Laramie County Community College in the mid-to-late 1990s and as chairman, vice chairman, secretary, treasurer and president of the Cheyenne Schools Federal Credit Union from 1982 to 1994.

Equally passionate about his community, Mr. Scherr was a volunteer mathematics tutor at the Grace United Methodist Church in 2000 and president of the East High Band Parents Organization from 1978 to 1979. Serving the Boy Scouts of America in several capacities, including as a scoutmaster and Webelos leader of Pack 124, he was also president of the Parent Teacher Association at Buffalo Ridge School and president of the board at the Buffalo Ridge Public Swimming Pool. He has additionally maintained affiliation with the Wyoming Education Association, the National Education Association and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.

In recognition of his outstanding contributions to education, the state of Wyoming honored Mr. Scherr with a Presidential Excellence Award in 1984, a crowning moment of his career. In addition, he has been highlighted in the fifth edition of Who’s Who in American Education. Married to the late V. Abigail Sorensen, he is the proud father of five children and six grandchildren. In his spare time, he enjoys reading, gardening, golfing and hiking.
