Hildred M. Schmidt, Music Teacher at Lyons Unified School District 405, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in music education.
Hailing from a musically-gifted family, Ms. Schmidt began playing the piano at the tender age of 6. Influenced by her father, a trumpeter, and her sister, who studied and played an assortment of instruments, she commenced her career as a student at the College of Emporia, where she earned a Bachelor of Music in music education in 1954. Thereafter, she received a Master of Music in music education, with highest distinction, from Indiana University in 1958.
While pursuing her master’s degree, Ms. Schmidt served as a music teacher at Mullinville Grade School from 1954 to 1957. Remaining in the same capacity for her entire career, she subsequently served a number of schools, including Zenda Grade and High School, Inman Grade School and Lyons Junior High and High School. Drawing upon more than four decades of experience, she retired from education in 1996.
In her spare time, Ms. Schmidt lent her time and expertise to several musical ventures, most recently serving as an organist of the Goessel Mennonite Church from 1987 to 2004 and a founding member of The Silver Sounds from 1960 to 2004. Likewise, she was a church choir director in Mullinville and Inam, KS, an organizer for the Lyons Junior High Music Department Festivals and the reorganizing chairman of the McPherson County Music Festival.
Affiliated with the American Guild of Organists in numerous roles since 1988, Ms. Schmidt has been recognized for her contributions to the education industry, having won a Master Teacher Award in 1984. Notably, she has been highlighted in myriad editions of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in American Education, Who’s Who in the World and Who’s Who of American Women for her efforts.
