Sreeramamurthy Ankem, Ph.D., Professor at the University of Maryland, College Park, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in materials science and higher education.

Utilizing nearly four decades of industry and academic experience, Dr. Ankem is a renowned figure in the field of materials sciences, having served as a professor in the department of materials science and engineering at the University of Maryland, College Park, since 1985. In his unique position, he focuses his research efforts on the physical and mechanical behavior of titanium alloys, stainless steels and other structural materials, devoting his studies to the modeling microstructure evolution in several research areas. Maintaining two projects on campus, an investigation of thermal aging effects on the evolution of microstructure and the study of twinning and oxygen interstitial interactions in model titanium alloys, he commenced his career as a metallurgist for RMI Titanium Company from 1980 to 1984.

Dr. Ankem holds an undergraduate degree from Karnataka Regional Engineering College, a master’s degree from the Indian Institute of Science and a doctorate from Polytechnic Institute of New York/New York University Tandon School of Engineering. Alongside his primary endeavors, he previously worked as a program director of the metals program for the National Science Foundation from 2004 to 2005 and has been a past chairman of the titanium committee for the TMS Professional Society in Pittsburgh, PA. Notably, he has been a fellow of ASM International since 2001.

In recognition of his exceptional contributions to the industry and academia, Dr. Ankem has accrued several accolades. Honored with an ASM Materials Science Division Research Award in 1990, he was also presented with the George Kimball Burgess Memorial Award in 1996-1997, which is the highest honor given by the Washington chapter of ASM International. Likewise, he has been selected for inclusion in the 64th edition of Who’s Who in America, published in 2010.
