Charles S. O’Mara, MD, MBA, Associate Vice Chancellor for Clinical Affairs at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in medical education.

Dr. Charles O’Mara is a vascular surgeon and medical educator, who has over 40 years of professional experience to his credit. He is considered a leading authority in the field, and he currently serves as Associate Vice Chancellor for Clinical Affairs and Professor of Surgery at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. He came to the university to assume these roles after decades of professional success in private practice as a surgeon. He is a highly rated and recognized surgeon, and his current role at a prominent state-supported academic medical center allows him the opportunity to give back in a way that has even broader reach.

Dr. O’Mara started on his career path at the University of Mississippi, where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1970. He then graduated from Tulane University Medical School in New Orleans in 1973.  From 1973 to 1979 he continued his medical training in Baltimore at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, where he was first a surgical intern, then resident, and finally chief resident. He then completed a vascular surgery fellowship at Northwestern University in Chicago in 1980, after which he returned to Johns Hopkins as a staff surgeon with an appointment as Assistant Professor of Surgery at The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.

In 1982, he returned to Mississippi and joined the Cardiovascular Surgical Clinic, P.A. in Jackson, where he was a partner and surgeon for the next 26 years.  From 2008 to 2013, Dr. O’Mara was a vascular surgeon at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center. During this period he also earned a Master of Business Administration degree at the University of Texas at Dallas in 2011.  In 2013, Dr. O’Mara joined the University of Mississippi Medical Center as Professor of Surgery and Special Advisor to the Vice Chancellor for Health Affairs and Dean of the School of Medicine.  In 2014, he assumed the role of Associate Vice Chancellor for Clinical Affairs, the position he currently holds.
