With a career in music education that has lasted nearly 50 years, Mr. Szalacsi is currently the band director at St. Catherine of Siena. Prior to his current position, he served as coordinator of the music department at John Bowne High School in Flushing from 1996 to 2009. He has worked as a music teacher and coordinator at a number of schools in New York throughout his career, sharing his passion for music with young students across the state. As a very talented musician himself, Mr. Szalacsi has performed as a trumpeter with a number of orchestras and groups over the years, including the Steven Scott Orchestra, the Bronx Symphony Orchestra, and the Brass Choir for St. Catherine of Sienna Church.
Mr. Szalacsi knew from a very young age that he wanted to be a musician. In pursuit of his goal, he attended Mannes College of Music, where he received a BS in Music in 1969. After this he began teaching music – first at Kings Point Day School, and then P.S. 190 in Brooklyn. In 1972 he completed a Master of Music Education at Manhattan School Music. He would go on to teach at a number of other schools, finding great inspiration in his students – especially those from economically depressed areas, many of whom displayed a great interest in music.
