Drawing upon more than 20 years of professional excellence in elementary education, Ms. Burns most recently served as a first grade teacher at Leo A. Savoie Elementary School from 2002 until her retirement from the industry in 2004. Prior to this illustrious role, she was a reading specialist at Globe Park Elementary School from 1999 to 2002 and a first grade teacher at Blessed Sacrament School from 1990 to 1991. She commenced her career as a first grade teacher at St. James Elementary School from 1982 to 1990. Even after retirement, she served as head of the after-school homework program at LifeHouse Community Church from 2010 to 2012.
Ms. Burns holds an associate degree from the Community College of Rhode Island, and a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree from Rhode Island College. She was certified as a reading specialist and consultant in the state of Rhode Island soon thereafter. Equally passionate about her community, she served LifeHouse Community Church as president of the church council and elder between 2010 and 2015, as well as the Dysart Unified School District as a volunteer from 2006 to 2007.
As a testament to her success in education, Ms. Burns was named Teacher of the Year by Walmart in 1999, which she cites as a highlight of her career. Likewise, she has been highlighted in the 26th edition of Who’s Who in the World, as well as multiple editions of Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who of American Women.
