Betty Jennette Tinnel Matheny, Retired Associate Professor at Wytheville Community College, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in education.

Ms. Matheny, a distinguished educator with 40 years of professional experience to her credit, spent 30 years as an associate professor of office systems technology at Wytheville Community College between 1969 and 1999. Prior to this illustrious role, she was a business teacher at Richwood High School and Ripley High School between 1961 and 1968, having previously served as secretary of the autonetics division of North American Aviation in Cape Canaveral, FL, from 1960 to 1961. She commenced her career as a business teacher at Nicholas County High School in 1959.

To prepare for her career, Ms. Matheny pursued formal education at West Virginia University Institute of Technology, obtaining a Bachelor of Science in business education in 1959. She subsequently received a Master of Arts in business education from Marshall University in 1965. After gaining experience in the field, she completed postgraduate coursework at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 1975. She is a certified teacher of business education in the states of Virginia and West Virginia.

A member of the American Association of University Women, where she was formerly the treasurer of the Wytheville chapter between 1978 and 1985, Ms. Matheny also maintained affiliation with the Southern Business Education Association and the Virginia Business Education Association. As a testament to her success, she received the Honor Award from the Southern Business Education Association in 1985 and the Outstanding Contribution Award from the Virginia Business Education Association in 1986. Ms. Matheny has been selected for inclusion in the first edition of Who’s Who in the Media and Communication, as well as several editions of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in American Education, Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, Who’s Who in the South and Southwest, and Who’s Who of American Women.
