Paul Eric Petrie, Professor Emeritus at Virginia Commonwealth University, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in interior design and higher education.

Advised by a counselor to enter the world of interior design, Mr. Petrie attended the University of Manitoba, where he earned a Bachelor of Interior Design, with Gold Medal honors, in 1967. Commencing his professional career as a professor at his alma mater the same year, he also served as a partner with Group 4 Design Consultant in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, from 1969 until his immigration to the United States in 1984. While in Canada, he additionally worked as partner for GBR Associates, Architects and Engineers in 1968 and in the western stores division of Eaton’s of Canada in 1967. He earned a Master of Fine Arts from Syracuse University in 1977.

Serving Virginia Commonwealth University for the remainder of his career, Mr. Petrie was a professor and chairman of the university from 1984 to 1995, having subsequently held the role of assistant dean of the School of the Arts from 1995 to 1996. Ascending the ranks to associate dean and then the founding and associate dean of the School of the Arts in Qatar between 1996 and 2003, he simultaneously acted as a professor until attaining emeritus status in 2005. He also served as the area head of interior design in Qatar from 2003 to 2005. Most recently, he was the CIDA Accreditation Coordinator within the department of interior design at Virginia Commonwealth University from 2014 to 2015.

Alongside his primary appointments, Mr. Petrie was an interior design consultant and a visiting professor at the Beijing Central Academy of Art in 1996, having subsequently held a fellowship with the Interior Design Educators Council from 1992 to 2005. The recipient of multiple grants from the School of the Arts at Virginia Commonwealth University, the University of Manitoba and the University of Oregon, he also was a visiting professor at Suzhou University in Suzhou, China, in 1996.

A contributor of myriad articles to professional journals, Mr. Petrie has remained involved with his industry through his affiliation with several organizations, such as the International Interior Design Association, the Foundation for Interior Design Education Research, the Professional Interior Designers Institute of Manitoba, and the American Society of Interior Designers, among others. As a testament to his success, he was the recipient of the Presidential Medallion from Virginia Commonwealth University, the Excellence Award from the School of the Arts at Virginia Commonwealth University, and the Presidential Citation from the Interior Design Educators Council. He has been highlighted in multiple editions of Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who in the South and Southwest.
