Peter B. Berendsen, Ph.D., Assistant Dean at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in academic administration and higher education.
Drawing upon more than 40 years of professional experience, Dr. Berendsen is an esteemed educator who most recently served as an assistant dean and associate professor at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey in Newark, NJ, between 1981 and 2003. Prior to these prominent roles, he was employed by the university as an assistant professor from 1972 to 1981 and an instructor from 1972 to 1973. In addition, he acted in multiple roles with the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD, the University of Michigan and the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology. He commenced his career as a soldier in the United States Army from 1960 to 1962.
To prepare for his illustrious career, Dr. Berendsen pursued formal education at St. Mary’s College, where he earned a Bachelor of Science. Soon thereafter, he received a Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy from George Washington University. Being drafted to the army after college, he was sent to a biomedical research facility, where he learned about academic science and established a foundation for the rest of his eminent career.
In an effort to remain aware of recent developments within the industry, Dr. Berendsen maintained affiliation with numerous organizations, such as Sigma Xi, where he served as chapter president from 1990 to 1991 and again from 1995 to 1997. He also remained associated with the Microscopy Society of America, the American Association of Anatomists, the American Association of Cell Biology and the Microcirculatory Society. Notably, he has contributed 25 articles to peer-reviewed journals throughout his career.
As a testament to his professional success, Dr. Berendsen received grants from the American Lung Association and the National Institutes of Health. He has been highlighted in the first and fifth editions of Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, as well as the first edition of Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare.
