Betsy Mickey McDowell, Ph.D., RN, Professor of Nursing at Newberry College, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in nursing education.
Dr. McDowell knew from her formative years that she always wanted to delve into the field of nursing. Earning a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of South Carolina in 1971, she subsequently received a Master of Science in Nursing from the University of North Carolina in 1975. Between 1971 and 1989, she attended her first post as a staff nurse at the Self Memorial Hospital in Greenwood, SC, while simultaneously serving as a part of the nursing faculty at Lander University from 1971 to 2007. During this time, she acted as the head nurse of pediatrics at Self Memorial Hospital in 1973, a staff nurse at North Carolina Memorial Hospital from 1973 to 1975, and a staff nurse in the pediatric intensive care unit at Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital from 1988 to 2002. From 2002 to 2009, she served as a staff nurse in the neonatal intensive care unit at Self Regional Healthcare. Since 2007, she has been a distinguished professor and chair of nursing at Newberry College, where she also previously served as a consultant for one year in the mid-2000s.
After gaining experience in the field, Dr. McDowell earned a Doctor of Philosophy in nursing science from the University of South Carolina in 1997, later becoming a fellow of the Academy of Nursing Education in 2015. She is a certified nursing educator through the National League of Nursing and holds a Registered Nurse license through the State of South Carolina. Likewise, she is a certified critical-care RN in pediatrics through the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses. Among her notable achievements, she is most renowned for examining pain perceptions and responses of acutely and critically ill pediatric and adult patients undergoing procedures, as well as research in home apnea monitoring, family functioning, concerns and coping.
As a testament to her professional success, Dr. McDowell has accrued myriad accolades, including the Palmetto Gold Award from the South Carolina Nurses Foundation, the Nursing Excellence Award from the South Carolina League for Nursing, and the Excellence in Teaching Award. Celebrated for her expertise in the field, she also won the President’s Award from the South Carolina Nurses Association and the Excellence in Maternal Child Health Nursing Practice Award. She has notably been highlighted in the 28th edition of Who’s Who of American Women and multiple editions of Who’s Who in America.
