Bertina Wilson, Vice Principal (Retired) at Newark Public Schools, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in education administration.

After more than three decades of services in public education, Ms. Wilson retired in 1997, remarking on an incredible career. Early in her career, she taught as a music teacher at St. Paul’s Roman Catholic School. From 1960 to 1977, she joined the Newark Board of Education and taught within the school system. In 1977, she became a project coordinator, and remained contributing in this role up until her retirement. From 1995 to 1997, she also served as a vice principal within the school district. She felt her work and the work of her equally passionate coworkers has helped illuminate the academic paths for generations of students to walk through the hallways of her schools.

Ms. Wilson first earned a Bachelor of Arts from Newark State College in 1960 and subsequently became a certified elementary education teacher via the State of New Jersey. In 1981, she received a Master of Arts from Kean University. Although retired, she remains a committed educator in her church. She is the minister of music for Zion Hill Baptist Church and has been the church organist and choir director at the house of worship since 1974. Furthermore, she leads noon time prayer.

In her career, Ms. Wilson has been recognized with several awards and accolades. She was acknowledged as an Outstanding Church Musician from the Order of the Eastern Star in 1986. She has also received the Living Legend Award from the Zion Hill Baptist Church and the Community Service Award from the Essex County Civic Association. In 2017, Marquis Who’s Who recognized her contributions to the academic field with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. She has been involved with the Newark Chapter of the Project Coordinators Association since 1981 and has also provided her talents to Phi Delta Kappa, the Newark Teachers Union and the Order of the Eastern Star.
