Drawing upon nearly 40 years of professional experience, Ms. Akers is a respected and admired educator whose dedication to her students has not gone unnoticed. Most recently serving as an elementary and middle school teacher for Fenton Area Public Schools in Michigan from 1962 until her retirement in 1996, she formerly acted as a mathematics teacher at Spanishburg High School in Spanishburg, WV, from 1958 to 1962. Alongside her primary endeavors, she was part of the mathematics curriculum committee in Fenton, MI, from 1962 to 1996.
To prepare for her illustrious career, Ms. Akers pursued formal education at Concord University, where she received a Bachelor of Education in 1958. She subsequently earned a Master of Education in elementary education from the University of Michigan in 1968. Thereafter, she became certified as an elementary and secondary mathematics and English teacher in the state of Michigan.
In an effort to remain aware of recent developments within the field, Ms. Akers maintained affiliation with numerous organizations, including the National Education Association, the Michigan Education Association, the Fenton Education Association and the Michigan Council of Mathematics Teachers. As a testament to her professional success, she was named an Outstanding Mathematics Teacher by the Fenton Education Association. Notably, she has been selected for inclusion in the 63rd edition of Who’s Who in America and multiple editions of Who’s Who in American Education and Who’s Who of American Women. In 2018, she was presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award.
