Peter J. Hammond, Ph.D., Professor Emeritus of Economics at Stanford University, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in economics education.

Backed by nearly five decades of professional experience, Dr. Hammond is a native of Marple, England, and attended Cambridge University in his youth, earning a Bachelor of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy in 1967 and 1974, respectively. At the inception of his career, he worked as a junior research fellow at Nuffield College in Oxford, England, from 1969 to 1971 and a lecturer at the University of Essex in Colchester, England, from 1971 to 1976, where he subsequently transitioned into the role of professor until 1979. Immigrating to the United States that year, he served a significant portion of his career as a professor of economics at Stanford University in California, reaching emeritus status in 2007. During this time, he also held the role of professor at the European University Institute in Florence, Italy, from 1989 to 1991. Dr. Hammond continues to serve as a professor of economics at the University of Warwick in Coventry, England, a role he has fulfilled since 2010.

Throughout his career, Dr. Hammond has accrued several honors, including receiving fellowships from The British Academy, the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation and the Econometric Society. Likewise, he was the recipient of honorary doctorates from the University of Oslo in Norway and the University of Kiel in Germany, and he briefly served as the Marie Curie Excellence Chair with the European Commission from 2007 to 2010. From 1993 to 1994, he was also a grantee of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.

Dr. Hammond has co-authored several books in his field, including “Further Mathematics for Economic Analysis” in 2005 and “Essential Mathematics for Economic Analysis” in 2002. In addition, he was the co-editor of numerous books, such as the first two volumes of “Handbook of Utility Theory,” published in 1998 and 2004, and “Incentives, Organization and Public Economics” in 2000. However, the highlights of his career have been the opportunities he has received to travel across the globe to conduct seminars and conferences, having most recently served as the Hicks Lecturer at a conference in Portugal for the Society of Advancement of Economic Theory in June 2017.

Married to Mrudula A. Patel since 1979, Dr. Hammond intends to continue writing and accepting invitations to talk in the coming years. He has been highlighted in the seventh edition of Who’s Who in American Education and the 55th through 57th editions of Who’s Who in America.
