John S. Mackiewicz, Ph.D., Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Biology at the State University of New York at Albany, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Scientists for dedication, achievements, and leadership in biology and higher education.

Dr. Mackiewicz is prominent educator of biology who recently celebrated six decades of professional experience in the academic realm. Most recently serving as a part-time distinguished teaching professor of biology at the State University of New York at Albany from 2002 to 2017, he previously held the role of full-time distinguished teaching professor at the university from 1961 to 2002. He commenced his career as an instructor at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY, from 1957 to 1959.

Interested in the natural world and biological processes since his formative years, Dr. Mackiewicz believes that the world is filled with wonder, which attracts the interest of students, educators, scientists, and executive professionals alike. He considers the crowning moment of his career to have been when he had an epiphany regarding the evolution of tapeworms. Ten years prior, he was requested to write a review on the subject; however, he was unable to develop new ideas. After one decade, he was asked to pen the review again, and the ideas suddenly came flooding in. To this day, he utilizes this experience to teach his students that studying and working hard can contribute to the progression of the brain, as developing new concepts becomes easier and more fluid.

Dr. Mackiewicz has contributed more than 50 articles to esteemed scientific publications in his field and has served as a consultant and co-author of papers regarding English as a second language. He has also described 21 new species of tapeworms. Throughout his career, he has maintained affiliation with numerous professional societies, including the Helminthological Society of Washington, where he is a lifetime member. Likewise, he remains associated with the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, and the American Society of Parasitologists. Dr. Mackiewicz holds a Bachelor of Science, Master of Science, and Doctor of Philosophy in biology from Cornell University. He also completed a postdoctoral fellowship with the National Institutes of Health at the Switzerland Institute of Zoology. Notably, he has been highlighted in the 65th edition of Who’s Who in America.
