With a deeply caring nature and a desire to help others, Ms. Akers has dedicated herself to mathematics education. Always loving her teachers and attending school, she developed a love for math, helping other students understand difficult concepts. Ms. Aker’s initiative to help others in their studies inspired her to pursue teaching, earning a Bachelor of Education from Concord University in 1958 and a Master of Education in elementary education from the University of Michigan in 1964. She is certified to teach elementary and secondary mathematics as well as English in the state of Michigan and has done so prior to her retirement. Ms. Akers improved the lives of hundreds of students, serving as a mathematics teacher for Spanishburg High School in Spanishburg, WV, from 1958 to 1962, an elementary and middle school teacher for the Fenton Area Public Schools in Michigan from 1962 to 1996 and on the mathematics curriculum committee in Fenton from 1962 to 1996.

Ms. Akers attributes her success to her high school teacher Iilene Myers and has striven to offer the same positive influence to her own students. Forging positive relationships with all people, her first teaching position took place at Spanishburg High School the year after she graduated.  Ms. Akers has been well liked by the community, colleagues, parents and students, who were all happy to invite her to return to the school as a teacher. Ms. Akers has delighted in her teaching and feels immense joy when her students understand the concepts she explains to them. Many times, students whom she has taught have grown to become teachers themselves as a result of Ms. Akers’s inspirational influence, something she is enormously proud of.

Consistently present for her students, Ms. Akers has been an understanding educator, recognizing that each person learns differently and tailoring her students’ educational needs to help them reach success. This dedication to her success has resulted in her being named the Outstanding Mathematics Teacher by the Fenton Education Association. Furthermore, Ms. Akers has held membership with the National Education Association, the Michigan Education Association, the Fenton Education Association and the Michigan Council on Mathematics Teachers for her dedication to mathematics education. Her students remember her love for her profession, often contacting her via social media platforms to share details about their lives. Though she has since retired, Ms. Akers does not believe schooling ever truly ceases, learning that that education is an ongoing process. An exceptional educator who has excelled in her profession, Ms. Akers has been lauded with The Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award and has been featured in multiple editions of Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who in American Education.
