An exceptional educator with a true passion for teaching, Dr. Chown has spent decades sharing his knowledge with his students. He has been affiliated with North Illinois University since 1982, holding the position of professor emeritus for the institution since 2014. Prior to his current position, Dr. Chown has served the university as an assistant professor of film studies from 1982 to 1988, associate professor from 1988 to 1998 and a professor since 1998. Further responsibilities he has held with the institution include serving as the honors program director from 1992 to 1995 as well as the graduate program director of the department of communications from 2000 to 2008. Mr. Chown fondly remembers his time as a Fulbright Scholar at Dublin City University from 1989 to 1990 as well as championing North Illinois University’s media and culture program for 22 years.

Specializing in media studies and analysis, Dr. Chown had always enjoyed film and literature, eventually producing his own films, including “Barbed Wire Pioneers” and “Lincoln and Black Hawk,” among others. He considers a highlight of his career to be when he presented “Barbed Wire Pioneers” at The Historic Egyptian Theatre in DeKalb, IL, with 1800 people arriving for the viewing. The film achieved second place at the Silver State Documentary Film Festival and one year later, he won Best Historical Documentary at the Silver State Film Festival for his movie called “John Peter Altgeld” in 1999. Dr. Chown’s creative pursuits have included lending his critical abilities as a manuscript reviewer for Random House Publishing Co. in New York City and for Wadsworth Publishing Co. in Belmont, CA. Currently, he is in the midst of writing a novel about the late 19th-century millionaire John Anderson and hopes to complete this work within the next several years. In recognition for his excellence, Dr. Chown has been presented the coveted Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award and has been featured in Who’s Who in the Midwest and Who’s Who of Emerging Leaders in America.
