An experienced educator with over 50 years of experience, Dr. Pierard has taught hundreds of students, sharing his love of history with all those whom he has taught. He developed a passion for teaching in his youth and considers being able to enrich his students’ lives to be the highlight of his career. Dr. Pierard’s knowledge is vast, his specialties including world civics, European history, modern Germany and world history. He served in the US Army from 1954 to 1956, later earning a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts from California State University, Los Angeles, in 1958 and 1959, respectively. Furthermore, he obtained a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Iowa in 1964. Dr. Pierard has been a history professor for Indiana State University from 1964 to 2000 and has been a professor emeritus of the institution since 2000. In recognition of his enormous success, Dr. Pierard has been presented with awards including, but not limited to, the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Conference on Faith and History in 2014, the W.O. Carver Distinguished Service Award from the Baptist History and Heritage Society in 2009 and the Terra Award for Community Service in Terre Haute, IN, in 1991.
Passionate about sharing his expertise with others, Dr. Pierard has contributed to numerous creative works, co-authoring “The American Church Experience,” “Baptists Together in Christ,” and “Civil Religion and the Presidency,” among others. Additional works he has authored include “Bibliography on the Religious Right in America” and “The Unequal Yoke: Evangelical Christianity and Political Conservatism” as well as articles to religious and historical publications. Pursuits Dr. Pierard has undertaken include serving as a member of the Baptist Heritage and Identity Study Commission for the Baptist World Alliance since 1990, secretary to the treasurer for the Conference on Faith and History from 1967 to 2004 and president of the Evangelical Theological Society in 1985 as well as numerous other membership roles. He has served as a visiting professor for numerous locations, including the South Asia Institute of Advanced Christian Studies in India, the Moscow Theological Seminary, the Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, CA, and the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. Due to his notoriety, Dr. Pierard has been featured in multiple editions of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in Religion, Who’s Who in the Midwest and Who’s Who in the World.
