Nancy Cullison, School Librarian and Educator for the DeKalb County School Systems, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in the field of education.
Since she was a child, Ms. Cullison had known that she wanted to be a teacher or a librarian, ultimately deciding to commit herself to both pursuits. In preparation for her influential career, Ms. Cullison attended the University of Georgia, earning a Bachelor of Education in 1973 and a Master of Education in 1980. She has been certified in middle grade and early childhood education as well as media specialist-service, all from the Georgia Professional Standards Committee. Currently, Ms. Cullison works as a teacher and librarian for the DeKalb County School Systems, as she has done since 1988. Her previous positions have included visiting primary school teacher at the Oxfordshire School in Oxford, England, in 1981, a recorder instructor for the Callanwolde Fine Arts Center in Decatur, GA, from 1979 to 1980 and a primary classroom teacher for the DeKalb county public school district from 1976 to 1988. Additional responsibilities Ms. Cullison has undertaken include secretary of Christian education for the Presbytery Greater Atlanta from 1999 to 2005 and elder of the Clairmont Presbyterian Church in Decatur from 1994 to 2009.
Ms. Cullison attributes her success as a teacher to pursuing interests outside of teaching, believing that doing so allows her to be a well-rounded educator with more to offer her students. Passionate about travelling and improving her musical abilities, she incorporates these hobbies into her teaching, inspiring her students to explore their own interests. Her educational approach has not gone unnoticed, as Ms. Cullison has been named Teacher of the Year by Toney Elementary School in 2010, an honor she considers a career highlight. In further recognition of her excellence, Ms. Cullison holds membership with numerous noteworthy organizations such as the American Library Association, the National Education Association, and the American Guild of English Handbell Ringers. She is a member of the Presbyterian Association of Musicians, the American Recorder Society, Phi Delta Kappa and has previously served as the recording secretary for the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society from 1986 to 1988. Ms. Cullison has contributed her musical abilities to numerous creative productions, including Christmas at Callanwolde, Ringing in Christmas with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, the Bells in Bethlehem Concert Series and for the Man of Peace: MLK Concert Series.
