Melva Giles, Nursing Professor, Researcher, Clinical Specialist, Assistant Chairperson at Pierce College, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in psychiatric nursing and education.
With more than 30 years of experience, Dr. Giles has garnered a wealth of experience when it comes to psychiatric nursing and teaching undergrads in the field, along with graduate students, research and administration work and curriculum development. She joined the faculty of Pierce College in 1989, and has remained at the institution as a professor of nursing ever since. She taught at the University of Phoenix from 2002 to 2007. Prior to starting at Pierce College, Dr. Giles served as a clinical nurse specialist for the County of Los Angeles, and was a guest instructor at the Research Education Institute at the University of California, Los Angeles. She has also directed programs at Pierce College, including in the Department of Nursing.
On top of these endeavors, Dr. Giles has contributed to the field as a nursing researcher since 2011. In her own career, she became an RN in California, and obtained an associate degree in nursing from the Catonsville Community College in 1970. In 1981, she continued at California State University, Los Angeles receiving a BSN. Following this, she received an MSN from the California State University, Dominguez Hills in 1988. In 1993, Dr. Giles received an EdD at Pepperdine University. On a civic level, she has been engaged as an educational ambassador to the People’s Republic of China and involved with the US – Sino Nursing Forum.
Dr. Giles has remained active in professional affiliations throughout her career. She is a fellow of the Nightingale Society and has been a member of the California Nurses Association, the Council of Black Nurses, the Future Society and the Association of Pan African Doctoral Scholars, Inc. In addition, she has maintained affiliation with Phi Delta Kappa, Sigma Theta Tau, Chi Eta Phil, Gamma Tau, the Nursing Research Group in China and Healthy People, Healthy Communities Through Nursing Contributions. She was nominated for the Ethel Witkin’s Research Award and has received a Distinguished Scholarship Award, as well as Certificates of Appreciation from Chi Eta Sorority. In 2017, she was recognized with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award.
Dr. Giles’ contributions have transcended both the classroom and clinical settings. She is a proficient writer, having penned such works as “Decision Making Styles and Effective Problem Solving,” “Development and Evaluation of an Information Index for Community College Based on Senate Bill 533,” “Re-Engineering the Traditional Nursing Curriculum” and “Perspective on Alzheimer’s Disease.”
