Richard Hemingway, Law Educator, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Lawyers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in oil and gas law.
Mr. Hemingway originally intended to go into the medical field, having his sights set on becoming a doctor. When his wife asked him to take an aptitude test, he discovered he would be better suited for business. Intrigued by this and wanting to learn more, he began taking business courses and took a business law course that forever cemented his decision to go into the legal profession. Since then, he’s spearheaded a full and rewarding career as a lawyer, starting out as an associate at Fulbright, Crooker, Freeman, Bates & Jaworski. In addition to practicing law, he has prepared future generations of legal professionals as an educator.
In his career, Mr. Hemingway has taught at Baylor University Law School, Southern Methodist University Law School, Texas Tech University Law School and the University of Oklahoma. Since 1992, he has been a Eugene Kunz Professor Emeritus at the University of Oklahoma. Mr. Hemingway’s practice areas focused on oil, gas and natural resource law. Mr. Hemingway prepared for his career in law by first earning a Bachelor of Science in business from the University of Colorado and continued his education at Southern Methodist University, earning a JD magna cum laude in 1955. He received an LLM from the University of Michigan in 1969. Before he was in law, he spoke to a co-worker of his, who was taking law classes at night while working full-time. He went home and told his wife that he wanted to do that as well.
Recognized for many years of dedicated service, Mr. Hemingway received an Outstanding Professor award from the University of Oklahoma in 1992. He was also a William S. Cook Fellow in 1968 and the recipient of the J. Woodall Rogers Senior Gold Medal in 1955. Mr. Hemingway maintained professional affiliation with the Texas Bar Association, Scribes, Order of Coif and Beta Gamma Sigma.
