Melchior Powell, Professor Emeritus at California State University at Long Beach, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in educational administration and law.

In a career spanning more than five decades, Dr. Powell has many accomplishments in the academic and legal fields. Under his tutelage, thousands of students have graduated from respected institutions and have gone on to become upstanding contributors in their endeavors. While Dr. Powell was the director of the Southern Maryland Higher Education Center, more than 1,200 students earned master’s degrees in public administration. He directed the center from 1997 until 2018. In addition, Dr. Powell has been a professor emeritus of California State University since 1992. He joined the faculty at the institution as the Dean of the Graduate Center for Public Policy and Administration in 1973. Earlier in his career, Dr. Powell taught at the University of Northern Colorado, directed contract research, and served as a city attorney for the city of Greenbelt, Maryland.

In his own academic pursuits, Dr. Powell first earned a Bachelor of Science at New Jersey State College in 1957. He continued at George Washington University, receiving Master of Arts in 1963. Following this, he obtained a JD from the University of Baltimore in 1966, and a PhD from the University of Maryland in 1968. He was mentored by Dr. Norman Beck while studying at New Jersey State College and by Dr. Connelly Dylan at the University of Maryland. In 2018, St. Mary’s County Chamber of Commerce recognized Dr. Powell with a Public Service Award. He has long been involved in his community, serving on board of directors, infrastructure boards, workers’ compensation commissions and poverty programs. Furthermore, Dr. Powell has contributed to articles and professional journals; he is the author of “Education for the Future of Public Service.”
