Mary Trefry, Professor Emerita at Sacred Heart University, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in organizational psychology.
Working in academia wasn’t always on the agenda for Dr. Trefry, but it came clear to her that a career in education may be her calling when she started doing consulting and training at libraries. She had worked at public libraries for nearly the first decade of her career before venturing in to teaching. Since then, she has coordinated academic programs and activities between Sacred Heart University MBA programs in the US and Luxembourg, as well as founded and facilitated joint cross-cultural programs for students in both countries. Furthermore, Dr. Trefry was successful in her leadership at the Welch College of business during a period of rapid college growth. With all of these academic successes in her career, Dr. Trefry was named a professor emerita of Sacred Heart University in 2017. She had started at the university in 1994 as an instructor and worked her way through promotions to coordinator positions and as an associate professor of management.
Learning has always been an important part of Dr. Trefry’s life. She first earned a Bachelor of Arts in French from Agnes Scott College in 1969 and continued at the University of Maryland to receive an MLS in library and information services in 1974. When the opportunities in her career began to point her to venture into academia, she returned to school and received a Master of Arts in organizational and social psychology in 1987 and a PhD in the same subjects in 1991 at Columbia University. Her work has been honored on numerous occasions, including receiving the Faculty Global Engagement and the Distinguished Service awards at Sacred Heart University in 2017. The university has also recognized her with the Bishop Walter J. Curtis Award, the Teaching Excellence Award, the Leadership Award and the Discovery Award.
