Mary Caroline Bailey Estes, Principal Lecturer at University of North Texas, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in special education.

Dr. Bailey Estes didn’t find special education, it found her. In the beginning of her career, she found it difficult to find a regular teaching position after she graduated, so she became a teacher’s assistant in a special education classroom. She found that she really enjoyed working with those students and transitioned into focusing her energy in that direction. After a decade as the special education department head at Key Elementary School, Dr. Bailey Estes decided it was time to pass her knowledge onto the next generation. She became a lecturer at the University of North Texas in 2001 and the chair of the Department of Educational Psychology in 2007. Today, she serves the school as a principal lecturer and as the coordinator of the IMPACT Alternative Certification Program in Special Education. The program is for those who want to become special education teachers and may have degrees in other professions; she teaches some of the courses in the program and advises students about the requirements.

Dr. Bailey Estes prepared for her endeavors by earning a Bachelor of Science in elementary education with a concentration in English and music from North Texas State University in 1970, certification in elementary education from the state of Texas in 1971, and a Master of Education from Texas Christian University in 1975. She furthered her academic standing with certification in special education in the state of Texas and a PhD in special education with a concentration in emotional and behavioral disorders from the University of North Texas. As a testament to her hard work and dedication, she was the recipient of the Outstanding Lecturer Award from the University of North Texas College of Education, the Outstanding Alumna Award from the University of North Texas Department Educational Psychology, and the Outstanding Advisor Award from the University of North Texas Student Council for Exceptional Children.
