Colonel Donald Edgar Alsbro, EdD, Health and Fitness Educator and Athletic Director at Lake Michigan College, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in health education.
A venerated and prominent figure in the fields of health education and military service, Dr. Alsbro has amassed more than four decades of professional excellence in his areas of expertise. He has been the founder and board member of Lest We Forget since 2007, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that promotes patriotism within the community and performs reenactments of the Vietnam War in remembrance of Vietnam veterans. With 300 members, Lest We Forget accrues an estimated 10,000 people who have attended their reenactments. In addition, he was the originator of the “Lest We Forget” documentaries, which have won myriad awards throughout the years. Prior to this position, he was a health and physical fitness professor at Lake Michigan College from 1973 to 1992.
Dr. Alsbro spent the majority of his career in the military, first acting as a commissioned second lieutenant with the United States Army in 1963. He subsequently served as a colonel with the United States Army Reserve from 1972 to 1994, having also spent time as a colonel in the United States Army in 1989. In addition, he was the developer of the “Dump Your Plump” National Worksite Wellness Program and is on the board of directors for Rainbow Wellness, a health promotion business.
To prepare for his illustrious career, Dr. Alsbro pursued a formal education at Western Michigan University, earning a Bachelor of Arts in 1963. He subsequently obtained a Master of Arts from Roosevelt University and Master of Science from Eastern Michigan University in 1973. Soon thereafter, he returned to Western Michigan University, where he received a Specialist of Education in 1980. Dr. Alsbro concluded his education in 1988, receiving a Doctor of Education from Wayne State University. He is a certified health education specialist.
Dr. Alsbro maintains affiliation with several organizations to remain aware of changes within the field. A member of Alliance for Health, he also associates with the Michigan Council for Physical Fitness and Health and the Association for Military Surgeons. In recognition of his exceptional contributions to education and military service, he was named to the Lake Michigan College Hall of Fame in 2001 and the Western Michigan University ROTC Hall of Fame in 1991. For his role in community leadership, he also received the Liberty Bell Award from the Berrien County Bar Association in 2008 and the Margaret B. Upton Volunteer Leadership Award in 2009.
