Joanne S. Calcagno, Writer and Retired Teacher at P.S. 214, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in writing and education.

Mrs. Calcagno was first inspired to enter the realm of teaching due to the influence of both her mother and her second grade teacher, Ms. Nevins. Opening her eyes to the opportunities that would present themselves in a fulfilling career, Mrs. Calcagno has found a passion in education, and the most gratifying aspect of her career has been witnessing the academic and social development of her students. Receiving a master’s degree in elementary education from Queens College in 1976, she commenced her career in a challenging homogenous setting, where she honed her skills as an educator that would serve as a foundation for the remainder of her career.

For the subsequent seven years, Mrs. Calcagno served as a teacher in a heterogeneous setting at multiple levels from kindergarten through sixth grade, where she was recognized as an esteemed educator due to the academic achievements of her students. Working in a nursery for seven years, she eventually was employed as a teacher at P.S. 214 in the Bronx, NY, until her retirement in March 2011. Alongside her primary endeavors, she has also been involved in a number of philanthropic organizations, such as St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, the 9-11 Memorial Museum, the National Childhood Cancer Foundation, the Veterans Memorial Fund and the Humane Society, among others.

In addition to being a celebrated educator, Mrs. Calcagno is a successful author, having penned her first book in 2007, “Raaof,” the chronicles of the adventures of an adolescent boy who has emigrated from Yemen to Queens, NY. Additionally, she recently published “Finally an Answer,” a book which follows the life of a young girl as she matures and copes with having a mental illness. Mrs. Calcagno’s third book, “Rewind Fast Forward: A Practical Guide of the Transgender Student for Teachers” was released in 2017 and is a guide for teachers regarding the proper treatment and acceptance of transgender students.

In recognition of her exceptional accomplishments, Mrs. Calcagno has accrued several accolades, including being honored in numerous teaching magazines as an acknowledgement of the creative energy she has always exhibited in the classroom which has allowed her students to thrive. Living by the Serenity prayer, “Do unto others as you would want them to do unto you,” Mrs. Calcagno has lived her life to the fullest extent and hopes to continue enjoying the evolution of her career.
