Marya R. Katz, Music Educator, Choir Director, and Performer at Dulcimations, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in music education.
The owner of Dulcimations, Ms. Katz is a retired elementary music educator who spent 33 years teaching students on the performance of various instruments. Most passionate about the hammered dulcimer, she also performs with a folk group, Simple Gifts of the Blue Ridge, and she composes original music and acts as a workshop leader at a variety of festivals along the east coast. In addition, she has been a choir director at the Northside Presbyterian Church since 1981.
To prepare for her celebrated career, Ms. Katz pursued an education at Alderson Broaddus University, earning a Bachelor of Arts in 1975. She followed this achievement with a Master of Arts from Marshall University in 1981. She has been a National Board Certified Teacher in early and middle childhood music since 2002. A member of the Music Educators National Conference, she has written several compositions, including “Dulcimations I” through “Dulcimations VIII” between 1998 and 2016, and has coauthored three books, including “Traditional Music in the Classroom: A Teachers’ Guide.”
In recognition of her exceptional contributions to music, she was honored with the Award for American Music Contest from the American Music Education Initiative in 2002. In addition, she was a grantee of Chinese music/art collaboration from the Virginia Commission for the Arts. Ms. Katz has been selected for inclusion in several editions of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in American Education, and Who’s Who of American Women.
