Sharon L. Bellak, Adjunct Professor at Pasco-Hernando State College, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in mathematics education.

Becoming a mathematics educator was always in the books for Ms. Bellak. At a young age, she modeled her playtime with her dolls as if she was teaching a classroom. She followed her nature in this sense and, driven by passion, pursued a career in education. Her career in academia spanned more than five decades and she offered this piece of advice  to the young minds in every classroom she has stood in front of: the students can choose a job, a career or a passion. She hopes all students follow their passions just as she has in life. Since 2009, she has taught at Pasco-Henando State College as an adjunct professor. She brought her decades of experience as a mathematics teacher with Seven Springs Middle School, Gulf Middle School and Horace Mann Middle School to this position.

In addition to teaching, Ms. Bellak was a math coach for Mathcounts, which is a national competition. Her team earned top regional and state awards most years and Ms. Bellak traveled to Washington, D.C., for a national competition for four years: three years with individuals and one year with the team. The individuals she coached placed sixth and seventh in the nation and one year she was the Mathcounts coach for the whole state of Florida, achieving tenth place in the nation. In Pasco County she also coached two math teams per year. One was an in-county algebra competition where she won numerous awards and the other was national competition in Mathcounts. Ms. Bellak led her team to nationals four times, earning honors for 23 out of the 25 years she competed and earning first place for 17 years.

Ms. Bellak prepared for a career in education by earning a Bachelor of Arts from Capital University in 1968. Later that year, she started her career and became certified as a mathematics teacher for grades five through 12 and as a German teacher for grades seven through 12 with the Department of Education. She has maintained affiliation with the Florida Education Association. Looking toward the future, Ms. Bellak hopes to still be teaching and tutoring Pasco-Hernando State College as well as sharing with students her tips and tricks.
