William Alexander Lester Jr., PhD, Chemist and Educator at the University of California, Berkeley, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in chemistry and higher education.
An esteemed figure in the fields of chemistry and higher education, Dr. Lester has amassed nearly 60 years of professional experience in his areas of expertise. Currently serving as a professor in the department of chemistry in the graduate school at the University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley), since 2010 and a senior faculty scientist in the National Resource for Computation in Chemistry at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory since 1981, he previously held other roles with the institutions, including as an associate dean in the College of Chemistry and professor of chemistry at UC Berkeley, as well as a number of roles with the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. He commenced his career in 1961, acting as a physical chemist with the National Bureau of Standards in Washington, DC.
The author of more than 200 papers to professional journals, Dr. Lester has served as a member of the advisory board and member of the editorial board of several journals throughout his career. In addition, he was the president of Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Honor Society, from 2000 to 2001, and served on numerous committees in the UC Berkeley chapter of the honor society during his tenure. A fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the National Organization for the Professional Advancement of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers, he is a member of the American Physical Society, the American Chemical Society, and the International Academy of Quantum Molecular Science.
In recognition of his exceptional accomplishments, Dr. Lester was given an Outstanding Service Award by the National Science Foundation in 1996 and an Outstanding Teacher Award by the National Organization for the Professional Advancement of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers in 1986. In addition, the Catholic University of America honored him with the Alumni Award in Science in 1983, and the National Organization for the Professional Advancement of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers gave him a Percy L. Julian Award in 1979. Dr. Lester has been selected for inclusion into several editions of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in American Education, Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, Who’s Who in the West, and Who’s Who in the World.
