Joseph Flaherty, Chancellor Emeritus at Adtelem Education, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in education management.

Throughout his career, Dr. Flaherty recalls the interactions with his patients and also his time committed to being the dean of the United States’ largest medical school at the University of Illinois as his top achievements. As a dedicated scholar and doctor, he has changed the lives of patients and future medical professionals for generations. He served as dean of the University of Illinois from 2004 to 2011, and previously as the institution’s Head of Psychiatry and Deputy of Psychiatry. Prior to academia, Dr. Flaherty was the chief psychiatry of the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center with the US Department of Veterans Affairs.

Dr. Flaherty always knew he wanted to be in medicine, but as he progressed in his own education, he came to the realization that he enjoyed the academic side of the profession as well. He first earned a Bachelor of Science form the University of Illinois in 1968, continuing with the institution to receive a Doctor of Medicine in 1971 and complete a residency in pediatrics. In addition, Dr. Flaherty has completed coursework in sociology at the University of London. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and the American Board of Geriatrics. Dr. Flaherty has also contributed to more than 200 papers, professional journals, books, and articles throughout his career. He is known for his research and for finding research groups in neurological science.

In recognition of his work, the Chair for Child Psychiatry Award at the University of Illinois at Chicago was named after him. He has been a featured listee in America’s Best Doctors by Castle Connolly. Throughout his career, Dr. Flaherty has maintained professional affiliation with a variety of organizations that have allowed him to develop. He is a distinguished fellow with the American Psychiatric Association and a fellow of The American College of Psychiatrists. Dr. Flaherty has also been involved as a board member of the University of Illinois Foundation, and as a committee member of the World Health Organization, the National Academy of Sciences and the National Institutes of Health.
