Dr. Piirto became involved in his profession due to his love of the outdoors and the guidance of two professors. In addition, his father was in the US Navy, and used to take him to the woods in Nevada, which fostered his love of being outside. Dr. Piirto originally planned to become an attorney while in college but the career didn’t feel right to him. Someone suggested the college of agriculture to better suit his interests, and the professor there sent him to the natural resources program. He was given materials about the program, and he saw illustrations of the outdoors and the kind of work the people were doing. He felt God was talking to him through the way the two professors mentored him. It was the example of the two professors, and many others that set for him to go into the agriculture field. In the many years since, he has instilled his passion for the outdoors in generations of students.

Dr. Piirto first earned a Bachelor of Science in forestry from the University of Nevada in 1970. He continued at Colorado State University to receive a Master of Science in forest/wood science in 1971. In 1977, he earned a PhD in wood science from the University of California, Berkeley. Furthermore, he has a certificate in silviculture from the institution. He is a certified forester via the society of American Foresters and in the state of California. In 2017, he received an archaeological surveyor certificate. He holds various other industry certificates with SAF Continuing Education Certificates, the United States Department of Agriculture and the University of California, Berkeley.

In 2015, Dr. Piirto became a professor emeritus of the California Polytechnic State University. He had taught at the institution for a number of years, first joining the faculty in the mid-1980s. Since 2015, he has been the board director of the Upper Salinas Las Tablas Resource Conservation District. He has been a consulting forester at Crestline Forestry since 1977. Furthermore, Dr. Piirto has worked in a number of roles for the United States Department of Agriculture and the US Forest Service.
