Norman Goldstein, MD, Clinical Professor of Dermatology at the Mount Sinai Medical Center at the Icahn School of Medicine, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in medicine and higher education.
An esteemed figure in his field, Dr. Goldstein has made continuous strides throughout his career as a dermatologist and professor. A clinical professor of dermatology at Mount Sinai Medical Center with the Icahn School of Medicine, he teaches prospective medical doctors the intricacies of proper skin care, as well as the treatment of skin cancer, acne, and other dermatological issues. Prior to this appointment, he served as chief of dermatology with the U.S. Army, as well as chief of dermatology and director of research and education at the Foundation Laboratory of Honolulu Medical Group.
Dr. Goldstein is renowned for several achievements during his tenure, including acting as the developer and publisher of the first photographic techniques for early detection of skin cancer in 1972. He also introduced cryosurgery to Pacific Islanders for the treatment of acne, established the first UV meter which prompted the reporting of the UV index on television, and was the first to utilize laser treatment for Kaposi’s sarcoma lesions. Notably, Dr. Goldstein also researched and developed the first sunscreen for cancer prevention.
The recipient of an undergraduate degree from Columbia College and Doctor of Medicine from SUNY Downstate Medical Center, Dr. Goldstein completed his residency in dermatology at the Skin and Cancer Hospital of Bellevue Hospital associated with New York University. In addition, he is known as a prolific author, contributing more than 200 articles to medical journals, chapters to books, and columns to editorials. He was also the author of the book “The Skin You Live In,” published in 1978, a how-to book discussing healthy skin care procedures and how to treat ailments such as acne and warts. He has further participated as an expert doctor in numerous books regarding tattoos.
In recognition of his exceptional accomplishments, Dr. Goldstein has accrued several accolades throughout his impressive career. Named a fellow of the American College of Physicians, he was honored as a Leading Physician of the World by the International Association of Dermatologists. In 1972, the American Academy of Dermatology presented him with the Original Research and Prevention of Skin Cancer Award. Additionally, he won the Laureate Award from the American College of Physicians in 2005 and a Commendation for 50 Years of Practice by the American Medical Association in 2009.
