K. Stuart Lee, MD, Neurosurgeon and Educator at East Carolina University, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in neurosurgery and higher education.
With nearly 30 years of professional experience, Dr. Lee has served as a clinical professor of neurosurgery at East Carolina University since 2001 and adjunct associate professor of health education at the same academic institution since 1997. Prior to these appointments, he held the roles of clinical associate and clinical assistant professor of neurosurgery from 1989 to 2001. In his position, Dr. Lee performs research on the efficacy of neurosurgical procedures, particularly carotid endarterectomy, and in the prevention of cerebrovascular attacks.
A member of the Ethicon Neurosurgical Advisory Panel from 1989 to 1995, Dr. Lee underwent extensive education to prepare for his celebrated career. Receiving a Bachelor of Arts in biology, cum laude, from Wake Forest University in 1977, he went on to earn a Doctor of Medicine at East Carolina University in 1981. Soon thereafter, he completed an internship and residency in neurosurgery at Wake Forest University Medical Center from 1981 to 1988, and he served as a neurovascular fellow with Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, AZ, from 1988 to 1989.
A prolific author, Dr. Lee has contributed his knowledge to the medical community through his writing. He has been the associate editor of Current Surgery since 1990, and he has contributed more than 30 articles to peer-reviewed journals and six chapters to various books. Dr. Lee became interested in medicine as a young child, influenced by the practice of his own family physician. Upon attending medical school, he found himself drawn to the field of neurobiology, and he began associating himself with neurosurgeons in the area. He subsequently fell in love with the anatomy and physiology of the brain.
A leader in his field, Dr. Lee has maintained affiliation with several industry-related organizations. A member of Alpha Omega Alpha since 1995, he served as president of the North Carolina Neurosurgery Society from 1994 to 1995. In addition, he is associated with the Southern Neurosurgical Society, the Leksell Gamma Knife Society, the American Heart Association, the American Medical Association, and the North Carolina Medical Society. Furthermore, Dr. Lee is a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, the American Society for Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery, the Southern Medical Association, and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons. Additionally, he is recognized as a fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
In recognition of his exceptional accomplishments in the field of medicine, Dr. Lee has accrued several accolades throughout his career. Named a Top Doctor by U.S. News and World Report in 2012 and 2013, he also won the Pathology Award from the School of Medicine at East Carolina University in 1981. In addition, he won third place in a poster contest at the Cerebrovascular Surgery Annual Meeting of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons in 1987. An influential figure in his industry, Dr. Lee has also been granted an Evelyn and Paul Bucy Fellowship for Neurological Surgery from the Bowman Gray School of Medicine at Wake Forest University.
Married to Cynthia Anderson Lee with two sons, Dr. Lee looks toward the future and aspires to continue providing high quality medical care to his patients, as well as developing neurosciences for the health care system. He has been named a Lifetime Achiever by Marquis Who’s Who and was selected for inclusion into several editions of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, Who’s Who in the South and Southwest, Who’s Who in the World, and Who’s Who of Emerging Leaders in America.
