James Anderson, Psychology Professor of Cognitive, Linguistic, and Psychological Sciences at Brown University, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in computational models and neural networks.
Dr. Anderson joined the faculty at Brown University in 1973, starting out as an assistant professor in cognitive and linguistic sciences. In 1978, he was made an associate professor and then in 1986, recognized as a full professor. In addition, he served as Chair of the Department of Cognitive and Linguistic Sciences from 1993 to 2002. Earlier in his career, Dr. Anderson was a research associate at The Rockefeller University from 1971 to 1973.
Inspired by science fiction, especially Isaac Asimov’s Foundation series, Dr. Anderson pursued a career in the sciences to fulfill his intrigue and curiosity. In 1962, he earned a Bachelor of Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and continued at the institution to receive a PhD in 1967. He became a postdoctoral fellow at the University of California, Los Angeles from 1967 to 1971. He has also served as a member of the advisory board of the Behavioral and Economic Sciences Directorate at the National Science Foundation. From 1992 to 1994, he was the chair of the Cognitive Functional Neuroscience Review Panel at the National Institute of Mental Health. Furthermore, he was the founder of Artemis Associates, Inc., which he launched in 1989 and was involved with until 2004.
In 2002 and 2012, Dr. Anderson received grants from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. He was also recognized with the Information Science Award from the Joint Conference on Information Science. He has been a grantee of the National Science Foundation and the Office of Naval Research on numerous occasions, and he served on the governing board of the International Neural Network Society from 1987 to 1995. Dr. Anderson maintains professional affiliation with the Cognitive Science Society, the Psychonomic Society, the Society for Neuroscience, the Society for Mathematical Psychology, and Sigma Xi. Throughout his career, Dr. Anderson has published and edited several books, including “After Digital: Computation in Brains and Machines,” “Talking Nets,” “An Introduction to Neural Networks,” “Neurocomputing: Some Important Papers,” “Synaptic Modification, Neuron Selectivity and Nervous System Organization,” and “Parallel Models of Associative Memory.”
