Prof. Eugene H. McCarthy, Professor at Middlesex Community College, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in linguistics and the humanities.
An esteemed figure in the field of higher education, Prof. McCarthy has many years of professional excellence in his areas of expertise. Serving as an adjunct professor at Middlesex Community College since 1991, he formerly acted as a professor of English and the humanities in the European Division of the University of Maryland, a professor of English and the humanities in the Center of Adult Education at Massachusetts Bay Community College, and a professor of Latin and Greek at San Francisco State University. He now teaches classical Greek and Roman mythology, as well as introductions to literature.
Alongside his professional endeavors, Prof. McCarthy also worked as a media relations officer with the White House Conference on Small Business at The White House in Washington, DC, a public administration officer for the Disaster Relief Program with the US Small Business Administration, and a regional public relations director of the New York region with the US Small Business Administration.
To prepare for his illustrious career, Prof. McCarthy sought out a formal education, obtaining a master’s degree in comparative literature from San Francisco State University. He subsequently completed an additional degree at Massachusetts Bay Community College in 1963, followed by a Bachelor of Arts in classical Greek language and literature at Boston University in 1965. He was cofounder of the Student Organization at San Francisco State University.
A former member of the National Association of Public and Continuing Adult Education, Prof. McCarthy has been honored with several accolades throughout his career. Named Professional of the Year by Biltmore Publishing in 2008, the first professor to win this prestigious award, he was also inducted as a charter member of the Leading Educators of the World by the International Biographical Centre in London, England, in 2006. In addition, he has been granted honorary citizenships in New Orleans, LA, and Detroit, MI. A proficient athlete, Prof. McCarthy has further been presented with numerous awards in men’s basketball, football, and softball.
Delving into his profession as a result of his passion for Greek and Latin languages, Prof. McCarthy enjoys coaching and playing competitive softball in his spare time. Additionally, he is coach of women’s softball at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Emmanuel College. Looking to the future, he intends to continue teaching and sharing his knowledge with colleagues and students alike.
