William J. Ash, PhD, Professor Emeritus at SUNY Stony Brook, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in higher education.

Dr. Ash is a Professor Emeritus at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. After graduating from Cornell in February 1953, he was commissioned second lieutenant in the U.S. Army. He completed the required Company Officer Course and was assigned to the 36th Quartermaster Composite Battalion at Fort Lee, Virginia. Subsequently, he was assigned to the 7717 Quartermaster School in Lenggries, Germany as a War-Dog Training Officer. Later, he worked with the Quartermaster Research and Engineering Command, Natick, Mass. studying the meteorology of Southeast Asia. After twelve years of active and reserve duty, he was awarded an honorable discharge. William entered graduate school in 1955 at Cornell University, completing his studies in genetics, endocrinology and pathology and earning his PhD in 1960. He enjoyed the academic amalgam of research and teaching which earned him appointments at Cornell, West Virginia, St. Lawrence, Kuwait and Stony Brook Universities. He was elected to the following honor societies: Ho Nun De Kah, Scabbard and Blade, Beta Beta Beta and Sigma Xi. He has published the results of his research in a variety of refereed scientific journals.

In 1963, after presenting a research paper at the XI International Congress of Genetics in Den Hague, The Netherlands, he proceeded to East Germany (GDR), as a guest scientist, to visit research facilities and to lecture at the Institut fuer Gefluegelzucht und Kleintierkunde in Merbitz bei Halle. Dr. Ash also assumed administrative positions with the U.S. government. He joined the National Science Foundation, working in the Division of International Programs. Specifically, he assisted in the operation of the U.S. – India, U.S. – Pakistan Cooperative Science Programs. He returned to the Middle East as a member of the U.S. – Saudi Arabian Joint Commission in Riyadh. Finally, he concluded his academic career at the State University of New York at Stony Brook (SUNY), retiring as Professor Emeritus. Professor Ash graduated from the St. Elizabeth R.C. School (Academy), in Queens County, and Brooklyn Technical High School in Kings County, both in New York City. Along with his professional obligations, William enjoys sailing, and has served as Commander of the Peconic Bay (N.Y.) Sail & Power Squadron and is presently with Cape Lookout (N.C.) Sail & Power Squadron as Senior Navigator. Recently, Dr. Ash was appointed to the United States Sail and Power Squadrons Board of Governors at the national level. Moreover, he has coached in the U.S. Amateur Ice Hockey Association. Professor Ash has been active in things Germanic. He served as secretary and president of the New Bern Alpenverein composed of persons with family connections to Austria, Germany and Switzerland, traveling to Germany and Switzerland for the celebration of the 300th anniversary of the founding of New Bern, N.C., sister city of Berne, Switzerland. He has taken sailplane lessons and now has two more items on his bucket list: flying a motor driven airplane and sky diving. He was married to Gertrude Louise Kehm for 48 years (1953-2001) before her passing. They had five children, Annalee, Barbara (deceased), William Jr., James, and Lydia. His late companion, Gwendolyn Eleanor Rose, resided with him for eleven years. Dr. Ash was born November 3, 1931, in Kings County, New York.
