An esteemed figure in the field of engineering, Dr. Tovey has accrued more than 35 years of professional excellence in his realms of interest. A professor at Georgia Institute of Technology since 1993, he rose through the ranks, formerly serving as an assistant professor and associate professor at the school from 1981 to 1992. Previously, he held the role of co-director of the Center for Biologically Inspired Design from 2006 to 2009, a senior research associate at the National Research Council from 1990 to 1991, and a consultant with AT&T Bell Laboratories, Weyerhaeuser Paper Co., and Freddie Mac from 1984 to 1992.

In preparation for his illustrious career, Dr. Tovey sought formal education, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts, magna cum laude, from Harvard University in 1977. He completed his education with a Doctor of Philosophy from Stanford University in 1981. As a respected voice in the field, Dr. Tovey served as an editor for “Modeling in Industrial Engineering,” and he has maintained affiliation with INFORMS and the Society of Neuroscience.

In recognition of his exceptional accomplishments, Dr. Tovey has accrued numerous accolades throughout his career. A grantee of the Biologically Inspired Design Education Grant since 2009, he also won the Sig-Econ Test of Time Award in 2016. He was previously awarded an auction-based coordination grant from the United States Army Research from 2008 to 2009, a fundamentals and applications grant from the National Science Foundation from 2006 to 2009, an online planning methods grant from 2001 to 2005, and a research initiation grant from 1983 to 1985. Furthermore, he was presented with the Jacob Wolfowitz Prize from AJMMS in 1989 and a Presidential Young Investigator Award from the National Science Foundation in 1985. However, the highlight of his career was being honored with the Golden Goose Award in 2016.

A research fellow of the Georgia Institute of Technology from 1995 to 1999, Dr. Tovey originally joined his profession due to his desire to explain the unexplained through education and research. As of 2019, he serves as the Vice-Chair of the Faculty Executive Board at Georgia Institute of Technology. Married to Gail Ann Foorman since 2000, he is the proud father of four children. In his spare time, he enjoys reading, singing, and listening to music. Notably, he has been inducted into four editions of Who’s Who in America for his contributions to engineering and higher education.
