Richard Bolan, Professor Emeritus of University of Minnesota, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in engineering and urban planning education.

Dr. Bolan has been an esteemed professor emeritus since 1998 after accumulating more than 40 years of experience in academia teaching engineering and urban planning at the University of Minnesota and Boston College. Prior to teaching, he worked as a planner with Providence Redevelopment Authority before working as a planner with the Planning and Renewal Associates, and then as a principal planner with the Boston City Planning Board. In 1962, he brought his skills to the table as the Director of Renewal Planning for the Boston Redevelopment Authority. Before moving into the field of academia, Dr. Bolan also was the Director of Planning for the Boston Regional Transportation Study. In 1964, Dr. Bolan accepted the assistant to director role at the Joint Center for Urban Studies of Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University. He held this position until 1967, where he then joined the faculty of Boston College as a professor. He taught at the institution until 1985. In 1985, he became a professor of urban planning until becoming a professor emeritus in 1998.

Dr. Bolan began his career by serving in the U.S. Air Force from 1945 to 1947, going on to earn a Bachelor of Engineering in civil engineering from Yale University before returning to the Air Force from 1950 to 1951. He followed this degree by attending the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, receiving an MCP in city and regional planning in 1957, and he later received a PhD from New York University.

Dr. Bolan has maintained professional affiliation with several organizations throughout the years, including the Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning, the American Institute of Certified Planners, and the American Planning Association. He became a fellow of the American Institute of Certified Planners in 2010. Furthermore, Dr. Bolan has edited Planning Metropolitan Boston, coauthored “Urban Planning and Politics,” and “Poland’s Path to Sustainable Development.” In recognition of his contributions, Dr. Bolan has been featured in Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in the Midwest and Who’s Who in the World.
