Patricia Thornton Hayes, Music Educator, Director (Retired) at Campostella Elementary School, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in music education.

Music has been a passion in Ms. Hayes’ life since an early age that she transformed into a successful career in music education. From 1956 until her retirement in 2005, Ms. Hayes served as a specialist of music with the Portsmouth Diagnostic Center since 1993. She started as a Director of Music at Clendenin High School in 1956, subsequently holding the same position with Shelton Park Elementary School, Campostella Heights Elementary School, Suburban Park Elementary School, and Bayview Elementary School from 1956 to 1960. She joined Mount Zion Elementary School as a teacher of music and special education from 1970 to 1971, later joining Meadowbrooke and Lakeview elementary as the director of music from 1972 to 1973 and Portsmouth City Schools as the director of choral and orchestra music from 1973 to 1996. Ms. Hayes was also responsible for directing music programs and music festivals for the City of Chesapeake.

In addition, Ms. Hayes was involved in the schools she worked at as a director of the theatre productions. Also involved on the creative side of music, Ms. Hayes composed “We’re Supporting You All the Way” in 1991 and has been the choral director of The Singing Beaz, the Mayor’s Breakfast, the Seawall Festival, Manor High School Award Banquet, and NAVSEA.

Ms. Hayes began her career by first earning a Bachelor of Arts from West Virginia University Institute of Technology in 1956. She remained committed to her own academic pursuits by earning a Master of Science in education from Old Dominion University in 1970. She has maintained professional affiliation with the Virginia Education Association, the American String Teachers Association, the Virginia PTA, the West Virginia University Institute of Technology, the Virginia Retired Teachers Association, Alpha Psi Omega, Delta Sigma Lambda and Phi Mu Gamma.

Throughout her career, Ms. Hayes has acquired a number of accolades for her many years of dedicated service. She has received the Outstanding Music Works Award from the Portsmouth City School Board, the Proclamation Award from the Fine Arts Commission, the Order of the Eastern Color, and the Grand Cross of Color from the International Order of the Rainbow for Girls.
