Ruth Perez, Associate Professor at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in biomedical sciences.
For more than two decades, Dr. Perez has served the medical community as an educator and researcher, providing her expertise in the field to future generations of medical professionals. Her work has taken her from the halls of the Harvard Medical School with Brigham and Women’s Hospital and to in front of the classroom at the University of Pittsburgh. She started her most recent position, as an associate professor of biomedical sciences for the Center of Emphasis in Neurosciences at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in El Paso in 2011.
With a longstanding love for science, Dr. Perez first pursued the field by earning a Bachelor of Science in biology for the University of Texas at El Paso in 1972. She did postdoctoral training at the Department of Neurology at Harvard Medical School. She also holds and honorary MS in neuropsychobiochemistry and honorary PhD in neurobiology from the University of Texas at El Paso and the University of Pittsburgh, respectively. Her area of research centers on neurology and she endeavors to help find cures for disorders such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.
Armed with tenacity and a spirit of never giving up, Dr. Perez has been recognized for her hard work on numerous occasions. Most recently, she received the Coldwell Foundation Award for Assessing Heart and Brain Effects of FTY720s. She has received grants from the Lizanell and Colbert Coldwell Foundation, the Molecular Regulators of Dopamine Synthesis and Synuclein, Parkinson’s Disease and Strategies for Neuroprotection. Furthermore, she received the New Faculty Award from the Nathan Shock Center for Excellence at the Allegheny University of the Health Sciences. Dr. Perez is the recipient of the Carl Storm Travel Fellowship. She maintains membership with the American Chemical Society, the International Society for Neurochemistry and the Society for Neuroscience among other prestigious organizations.
