Arlen Viste, PhD, Professor Emeritus at Augustana University, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in Chemistry Education.

Dr. Viste has been a member of the American Chemical Society for 50 years, and taught with Augustana University for 38 years to earn the title of professor emeritus in 2002. He had the pleasure to work with Henry Taube during his postgraduate research, who was later awarded a Nobel Prize in 1983. Dr. Viste also worked with internationally renowned research chemist Harry Barkus Gray. He has been a member of the Royal Society of Chemistry of London, the South Dakota Academy of Science, the Midwest Association of Chemistry Teachers in Liberal Arts Colleges, and several honor societies.

A recipient of the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award, Dr. Viste has appeared in the pages of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in American Education, Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, Who’s Who in the Midwest, and Who’s Who in the World. He accrued a BA from St. Olaf College in 1958, and completed a PhD in chemistry from the University of Chicago in 1962. After his stellar work in research chemistry, he was honored with fellowship in the National Science Foundation, and taught at St. Olaf for one year before being accepted by Augustana. Dr. Viste’s sabbaticals and various years have gone to research efforts with such illustrious institutions as the Argonne National Laboratory, the U.S. Department of Energy, and the Finnish Abo Akademi.

Among numerous accolades, Dr. Viste served as the Orin M. Lofthus Distinguished Professor of Augustana from 1989 to 1992. He has been a prolific contributor in the annals of chemistry literature, and co-edited “Memoirs of John August Froemke 1893-1988” for Augustana. He has also been active in his civic duties as a volunteer and board member for the university’s Center for Western Studies, and is presently a leader and visitor of the Stephen Ministry at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls, SD.
