Lin Shen, Associate Professor at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in Civil Engineering.
An expert in high performance concrete and the use of waste materials in concrete construction, Dr. Shen has been with the department of civil and environmental engineering at the University of Hawaii at Manoa since 2011, and was recently promoted to associate professor in 2017. He is a professional civil engineer certified by the state of California, and worked as a senior research engineer of Kai Krishnan Consulting Services in Oakland for four years before arriving in Hawaii.
A graduate of Tongji University, Dr. Shen earned a BEng in 1999 and completed a MEng from the National University of Singapore in 2002. He further earned a PhD in civil and environmental engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2007. Dr. Shen became involved with the University of Hawaii to help find a sustainable and locally sourced material for concrete in Hawaii, which reduces the isolated island state’s reliance on shipping materials. He hopes to continue developing new technologies, particularly a type of green concrete made from waste materials and designed for the U.S. and Chinese market.
Dr. Shen has been recognized as an associate editor of the ASCE Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering, and holds a seat on the editorial boards of ASTM Advances in Civil Engineering Materials as well as the Journal of Korea Institute of Building Construction. He recently took home a 2017 prize for testing, evaluation, and specification of self-consolidating concrete from the Federal Highway Administration, following a 2013 Northrop Grunman Excellence in Teaching Award from the College of Engineering at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, which also awarded him the 2013 Hi Chang Chai Excellence in Teaching Award.
