Belverd Earl Needles Jr., Ph.D., CPA, CMA, CGMA, Accountant and Educator at DePaul University, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in Accounting.
Dr. Needles has held the title of Ernst & Young Distinguished Professor of Accounting at DePaul since 2003, and was previously the Arthur Andersen & Co. Alumni Distinguished Professor of Accounting from 1988 to 2002. He has been teaching since 1968, and is very proud of his leading textbook, “Principles of Accounting and Financial Accounting” which has been used for first-year accounting students since 1983. Dr. Needles has been a member of the Intergovernmental Working Group of Experts on International Standards of Accounting and Reporting at the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development since 2009. He is a recipient of the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award, featured in Who’s Who in Finance and Business, Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in American Education, Who’s Who in the Midwest, Who’s Who in the World, and Who’s Who of Emerging Leaders in America.
A native of Lubbock, Texas, Dr. Needles earned a BBA and MBA from Texas Tech University and completed a PhD in 1969 from the University of Illinois. He was originally going into business with his father, who suggested he should major in accounting instead. During his postgraduate studies for a master’s degree, Dr. Needles was asked to teach a course and loved it. He joined Texas Tech in 1968 as an assistant professor, eventually becoming an associate professor before accepting the post of dean at Chicago State University College of Business from 1972 to 1976. He was a director of the School of Accountancy & MIS at DePaul University from 1976 to 1986, and was made a full professor of accounting there that year.
Of his many outstanding awards, Dr. Needles was most recently presented with a 2013 Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Institute of CPAs, now the Association of International Certified Professional Accountants. He is a fellow and current vice president of the American Accounting Association, and a former fellow with General Electric, and Deloitte Haskins & Sells, now Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu Limited. Dr. Needles belongs to numerous professional societies, as well as the honor societies Phi Delta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi, Beta Alpha Psi, and Beta Gamma Sigma.
