Mary A. Zahner, PhD, Art Educator, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in Fine Arts.
Dr. Zahner has held the title of professor emerita with the University of Dayton since 2008, after teaching there since 1971. She has been an art instructor in Ohio since 1960, and has been widely exhibited since the ‘90s. Dr. Zahner was honored with a 2007 Higher Education Division Award from the Ohio Art Education Association, and was twice named Outstanding Art Teacher by the organization’s western district. She was presented a 1969 Best of Show Award from the Canton Art Institute and a 1989 Institute Faculty Award from the Ohio Partnership for Visual Arts.
Originally from Dover, Ohio, Dr. Zahner attended Ohio University to receive a BFA and a MA, followed by a PhD from Ohio State University in 1987. She entered teaching with the Springfield Township Schools in Akron, Ohio, in 1960, and taught at Logan High School and Dover High School, becoming chair of the latter’s art department from 1969 to 1971. While teaching with the University of Dayton, Dr. Zahner served as a reviewer for Harcourt Brace & Company and Prentice Hall, and was a member of the advisory committee for Teacher Preparation Programs at the Ohio Department of Education. She is an executive board member of the Oxford Round Table in England.
Dr. Zahner has given much to her civic community, and is a member-at-large of the education committee of Culture Works: Arts and Culture Alliance Miami Valley. She was a coordinator of the 3D Congressional Art Contest in Dayton, Ohio, and has supported the Kettering Arts Council and the Miami Valley Arts Council. Dr. Zahner was most recently exhibited at the Gallery Saint John with the Marianist Environmental Education Center in Dayton, and is the author of “Barkan” as well as a contributor to artistic literature.
