Petra Jean Hegstad DeKrey, Retired Elementary School Educator, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in Teaching.
Ms. Hegstad Dekrey has been a teacher since 1966, and retired in 2005 after giving 11 years to the Moorhead Junior High School and spending her last year with eighth grade reading at the Horizon Middle School. She bases her success on parents who encouraged her, a solid marriage, and having a family with strong values. Ms. Hegstad Dekrey entered the profession because of good teachers like her mother, and making the decision to earn further education with a master’s degree was the highlight of her career. She is a recipient of an Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award and a Marquis Who’s Who Humanitarian Award, and has appeared in Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in American Education, Who’s Who of American Women, and the 25th edition of Who’s Who in the Midwest.
Originally from Oakland, California, Ms. Hegstad Dekrey attended Concordia College to study for dual bachelor’s degrees in elementary education and German. She entered the field as a second grade teacher, and focused on reading and English with the Chief Bug-O-Nay-Ge-Shig School from 1986 to 1992. In addition to her classroom roles, she was a practice test writer and teacher for Minnesota reading standards test prep classes, and a member of the license committee of District 152 for two years.
Since 2015, Ms. Hegstad Dekrey has done her civic duty as an election judge, and has been a longtime volunteer of the Sanford Medical Center and a member of the auxiliary at the North Country Regional Hospital affiliated with Sanford Health. In addition, she has given her time as den mother of the Boy Scouts of America, and as secretary for the Sons of Norway Lodge 500. Ms. Hegstad Dekrey is also a prolific church participant and in 1976 volunteered on the Committee to Help Refugees Relocate to Bismarck. She is a member of numerous associations, including the honor council of the Northland Reading Council, the International Literacy Association, and Kappa Delta Pi.
