James B. Edwards, PhD, CPA, William W. Bruner Distinguished Faculty Fellow at University of South Carolina, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in Business.
Dr. Edwards was named to his current role in 1990, and has been a professor with the University of South Carolina since 1977. He has led a rich and fruitful career in accounting and management, and is the editor of Emerging Practices in Cost Management and Activity-Based Management, a handbook of cost management for service industries. Dr. Edwards is also the author of “The Final Word,” published in 2016, and holds eight national awards for contributions to accounting literature. He is the recipient of an Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award and has appeared in Who’s Who in the World, Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in Finance and Business, Who’s Who in Finance and Industry, Who’s Who in American Education, and Who’s Who in the South and Southwest.
Born to James T. Edwards and Frances L. Edwards in Atlanta, Georgia, Dr. Edwards earned a BBA in finance from the University of Georgia in 1958, and went on to accrue a MBA and a PhD in business administration. He entered the field as a controller for Better Maid Dairy Products in Athens, Georgia, in 1958. Dr. Edwards started teaching in 1963 at Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tennessee, and was notably a managing partner of Wilson, Edwards, and Swang, Accountants, in the city. He returned to Georgia to partner with the firm of Q.F. Lester & Co. in the late ‘60s, and in 1977 he became a fellow of the Business Partnership Foundation at the University of South Carolina. Dr. Edwards is certified in cost analyst, internal auditing, management accounting, charted global management accounting designation, and data processing. He is a certified public accountant of Tennessee, Georgia, and South Carolina.
Dr. Edwards has also been prolific in his civic duty as treasurer of the Spring Valley Education Foundation from 1985 to 1993. He was also a Little League coach in Columbia, president of the Georgia Christian Foundation, and held a seat on the Atlanta Bible Camp board of directors. He was editor-in-chief of the Journal of Corporate Accounting and Finance, just one of numerous contributions to his field. Among numerous professional memberships, he is currently a member of the National Education Committee of the Institute of Management Accountants, Inc. Dr. Edwards is the proud father of James Benjamin II, Chad Reagin, Calli Ann, and Judy Clair with his wife, Virginia Ann Reagin.
