Akhouri A. Sinha, PhD, Professor of Genetics at the University of Minnesota, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in Science.
Often invited as a visiting lecturer, Dr. Sinha is also the namesake of Mt. Sinha in Western Antarctica, named by the U.S. Geological Survey in recognition for his many years in science. He has been teaching since he was a lecturer with the University of Ranchi in India in 1956, and has been teaching with the University of Minnesota in genetics, cell biology, and development since 2000. He is also a research scientist with the Veterans Affairs Medical Center for Research Service. Dr. Sinha is a recipient of the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award, and has appeared in Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare, and Who’s Who in the World.
Born in Churamanpur to Akhouri Chandra B. and Bittan Devi Sinha, Dr. Sinha studied with the University of Allahabad and earned an MSc from the department of zoology at the Patna University in India. He arrived in the U.S. in 1961 as a teaching and research assistant of the University of Missouri, where he earned a PhD in 1965. That year, he received postdoctoral training in anatomy from the University of Wisconsin Medical School, and became an assistant professor of anatomy with Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. Dr. Sinha became a citizen of the U.S. and notably served as a health science specialist and researcher of the Electron Microscopy Service with the Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
Dr. Sinha was an associate editor and editorial board member of the Anatomical Record for seven years, and has been a reviewer for the U.S. Department of Defense. He is a lifetime member of the American Association for Cancer Research, and has supported the Society for Basic Urologic Research, the American Society for Cell Biology, the Society for the Study of Reproduction, the American Association of Anatomists, the Indian Science Congress Association, and the Society for the Study of Reproduction. In his free time, he enjoys cross country skiing, photography, travel, and reading. Dr. Sinha married Dorothy Kay Pamer in 1979 and is the proud father of Sheila, Kaushl, and Poonam.
