Dr. Paula R. Mitchell, Dean at El Paso Community College, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in Nursing.
Dr. Mitchell has been the dean of health career technology, education, math, and science at the Rio Grande campus of the El Paso Community College since 2008. She is a registered nurse in Texas and Missouri, and served with the Medical Department of the U.S. Army in the Academy of Health Sciences, earning the rank of captain with the U.S. Army Reserve and the Army proper. Dr. Mitchell was decorated with an Army Commendation Medal and a Meritorious Service Medal, and after entering civilian service has received numerous accolades for community service and education.
Born in Independence, Missouri, to Millard Henry and E. Lorene Gates, Dr. Mitchell earned a BS in nursing from Graceland University, and completed an MS from the University of Texas in 1976, just one year after her marriage to Ralph William Mitchell in May of 1975. She has a son, Daniel Maher, from the union. In 1979, Dr. Mitchell began teaching at El Paso, and went on to hold the title of director of nursing from 1985 to 2003, among numerous positions. She was certified in ambulatory women’s healthcare and childbirth education, serving on the medical committee with Planned Parenthood from 1986 to 1998 and as a nurse practitioner with the organization. Dr. Mitchell is the co-author of “Nursing Perspectives and Issues” and a prolific contributor to medical literature.
Dr. Mitchell is the recipient of an Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award, and has appeared in Who’s Who Among Human Services Professionals, Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in American Education, Who’s Who in American Nursing, Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, Who’s Who in the South and Southwest, Who’s Who in the World, Who’s Who of American Women, and Who’s Who of Emerging Leaders in America. She was honored with numerous recognitions, notably a 2013 Distinguished Service Award from the Texas Society of Allied Health Professionals a 2003 Merit and Service Certification from the Victory Warriors Drill and Dance Academy. Dr. Mitchell is a member of numerous local women’s, military, and medical groups, notably as the National Vice Commander and Chief of the El Paso Commission. In her spare time she volunteers for community service, and loves to watch Star Trek.
