John Gruber, Retired Physics Professor, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in physics education.

With numerous patents in laser science and technology, Dr. Gruber has been an integral figure in each position throughout his career. For most of his career, he worked in education, teaching research, physics, astronomy and modern optics at several institutions. Prior to retirement, he worked at the University of Texas at San Antonio. He has also taught at San Jose State University, Portland State University, North Dakota State University, Washington State University and the University of California, Los Angeles. Additionally, he has taught at the Technical University of Darmstadt in Germany and been a visiting professor at Stanford University, Iowa State University and several other institutions. Since 2005, he has been the president of The Gruber Group.

Also prevalent throughout Dr. Gruber’s career is his work with the United States military. He has consulted and developed technologies for different military branches and for military-grade weapon and defense companies. From 1994 to 1998, Dr. Gruber served as the chairman of the program review board at NASA. All of these accomplishments wouldn’t have been possible without leaning on his strong educational background. In 1957, Dr. Gruber earned a Bachelor of Science at Haverford University. He continued at the University of California, Berkeley to receive a PhD in 1961. From 1961 to 1962, Dr. Gruber became a NATO postdoctoral fellow at the Institute of Technical Physics at the Technical University of Darmstadt.

Throughout the years, Dr. Gruber has been recognized with numerous awards and accolades. In 2005, he received the Award for Research into Night Vision Devices from the United States Army. He has also received awards that have named him among the best teachers. Dr. Gruber has received grants from the National Science Foundation, the Army Research Office and the AEC-ERDA. In 2017, Marquis Who’s Who has recognized him as an Industry Expert and with a Lifetime Achievement Award in addition to this Top Professionals feature.
