Myrna L. Fischman, PhD, CPA, Accountant and Professor at Long Island University Brooklyn,, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in Finance and Law.
Dr. Fischman has been the director and founder of the Center for Accounting and Tax Education at LIU since 1986, and director of its School of Professional Accountancy since 1984. She has had a successful career as a private practice accountant for 57 years, and was named a special trustee of the Professor Leo Schloss Excellence in Accounting Scholarship. Dr. Fischman is well known for her development of a business machine course and curriculum at the Borough of Manhattan Community College, the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance IRS program at LIU Brooklyn, and for her work in continuing accounting education programs in universities on Long Island. She has recently endowed the Myrna L. Fischman Excellence in Accounting Scholarship, and has been selected for inclusion in Who’s Who of American Women, Who’s Who in Finance and Business, Who’s Who in Finance and Industry, Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in American Education, Who’s Who in the East, and Who’s Who in the World.
Born to Isidore and Sally Fischman, Dr. Fischman attended City College with the City University of New York to earn an MS in 1964, and was certified to be a public accountant by the state of New York. She taught high school and collegiate accounting until 1969, when she joined the Office of the Queens District Attorney as a racketeering investigator and chief accountant. In 1970, she went on to become a community fellowship coordinator with the office and accepted a position as professor with LIU. Over the years, she has been a member of numerous economic development, women’s advocacy, and anti-discrimination activities. Dr. Fischman is currently a member of the accounting department advisory board of the Borough of Manhattan Community College, the New York City Board of Education, the Federal Credit Union, the American Jewish Committee, and the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce.
For her leadership in education and finance, Dr. Fischman has received numerous awards, most recently a 2014 Department of the Treasury Award from the IRS. Notably, she received a 1997 Special Director’s Award in Recognition of 40 Years of Service in the Volunteers in Technical Service Program, a 1997 Lifetime Achievement Award from Soroptimist International Brooklyn, a 1969 Meritorious Service Award from the Community Service Society, and the Dr. Emanuel Saxe Outstanding CPA in Education Award from the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants, where she has been on the board of directors since 2005.
